Lists with This Book. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Dec 26, Cait rated it did not like it Shelves: Not a good story at all - Really didn't enjoy it. The prologue of repressed former lives was completely irrelevant. Felt like a children's book apart from the sex and descriptions of erections.
Really simplistic language and kind of felt like Dorling Kindersly book on life in a Roman century. Author hadn't grasped the concept of 'show, don't tell'. Hint of religious story starting, but I'm not planning on reading the sequel to find out. A great adventure set in Roman Germany, the story sees the centurion Graecus adopting a ragtag slave as his son and follows their everyday life as well as the moments of tension arising not just from the unruly natives, but more sinisterly by the machinations of the Roman political machine.
Structures: Or Why Things Don't Fall Down (Da Capo Paperback)
This is a story of an introspective main character. It is light on action, and there's no real mystery or suspense, but, as the reader, I felt compelled to read on. The second half of the book flew by.

I did like getting a glimpse into the life of a Roman centurion in the time of Nero. It was not the book I expected, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I enjoyed the story about how a Roman centurian discovered the meaning on love when he took in an orphaned child.

I was never one for historical fiction, but this series draws heavily on Roman history; it gives an excellent idea of everyday Roman life for soldier, citizen and slave alike. Interesting premise, and I did finish it, but the storytelling was lackluster at best.
Not my normal read however I had to read it as I was desiging the cover art, it enraptured me so much I finished it in a day. Jul 23, Nancy Schober rated it it was amazing. A wonderful story told in spare and beautiful language. I can't wait to find out what happens next to the characters in the rest of the trilogy.
